Speed is the pitch at both of these schools, Capella through FlexPath and Purdue Global through ExcelTrack, and at both schools the fine print excludes the tracks most RNs shortlist them for: no nurse practitioner specialization runs inside either self-paced model. Both schools sell NP degrees, just never at the self-paced price. Purdue Global's standard MSN carries four NP tracks at $420 per quarter credit. Capella's carries three, structured GuidedPath format only, at $595 a credit for the FNP.

So the comparison is really two comparisons. If your destination is a non-NP master's, this is a billing-model decision between two competency-based formats. If your destination is FNP or PMHNP, the self-paced marketing is noise, and the real contest is catalog against price in the structured formats.

The NP catalog decides the first cut

Capella splits its MSN catalog in two. Four specialty-practice areas, Care Coordination, Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Leadership and Administration, run in GuidedPath everywhere and in FlexPath only for select programs, per the school's own program pages. Three NP specializations sit beside them, adult-gerontology primary care, family, and psychiatric mental health, and none of the three touches FlexPath. The FNP bills $595 per credit across 68 quarter credits, an estimated $40,460 with zero transfer credits, carries a 750-hour minimum practicum, lists a 39-month estimated finish, and is closed to applicants seeking licensure in California, DC, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and several U.S. territories^[1].

Purdue Global's MSN runs six paths under one roof: adult-gerontology acute care NP, adult-gerontology primary care NP, family nurse practitioner, psychiatric mental health NP, plus executive leader and nurse educator concentrations, with an average completion time of two years^[2]. Set the two NP menus side by side and Purdue Global's runs one track wider, adding acute care, at $175 less per quarter credit. An RN who wants prescriptive authority someday should weigh those numbers ahead of any pacing feature, and read the online FNP pathway explainer first, because NP practicum placement is the constraint that self-paced marketing never mentions.

What the two billing models cost

FlexPath charges one flat tuition fee per 12-week billing session, however many assessments you clear. On the nursing leadership MSN that fee is $2,985 per session across 27 program points, and Capella publishes its own three pace scenarios: $11,940 for an 11-month finish, $20,895 for a typical 19 months, $29,850 if you stretch to 27 months^[3]. The same school's GuidedPath version bills $465 per credit over 54 quarter credits, an estimated $25,110 in 30 months with no transfer credit. Study those four numbers together and the FlexPath bet becomes visible: a fast finisher beats every structured price in this comparison, and a slow finisher pays more than if they had never chosen self-paced billing.

ExcelTrack prices nursing programs at $3,200 per term excluding fees. The ExcelTrack MSN totals 60 quarter credits across 12 courses, and it comes with two catches worth reading twice. It covers only the Executive Leader and Nurse Educator concentrations, and the clinical and final-project courses inside it still bill at the standard per-credit rate rather than the flat term rate^[4]. Geography filters the applicant pool further: Tennessee residents cannot enroll in the ExcelTrack MSN, and residents of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin are barred from both of its concentrations.

Capella's MSN page markets the fast lane as "in 14 months and under $15,000," a figure drawn from its fastest quarter of students. Treat it the way you would treat any best-case number: possible, not typical. On the ROI side, finish speed moves the NP and nursing salary math more than the sticker difference between these two schools does, because every extra term is both money out and advanced-practice income deferred.

A public university system's arm against a Minneapolis for-profit

The two institutions are built differently, and the difference is documented rather than cosmetic. The federal College Navigator database lists Capella University as a 4-year, private for-profit institution in Minneapolis^[5], and Purdue University Global as a 4-year, public institution in West Lafayette, Indiana^[6]. Purdue Global's own tuition pages call it a public, nonprofit institution inside the Purdue system.

Where this lands in real life: some hospital tuition-reimbursement policies and some hiring managers treat public-system credentials as the safer default, and a Purdue-branded diploma travels on name recognition that Capella's does not carry. That reflects how the credentials are perceived at work. Both schools clear the same accreditation bar, which is the standard that state boards and reimbursement offices actually enforce.

Who should side with Capella anyway?

The honest case for Capella is narrow and real: a disciplined RN targeting a non-NP master's who can demonstrably clear graduate coursework fast. FlexPath's 11-month scenario, $11,940, is the cheapest published total anywhere in this comparison, and nothing at Purdue Global matches it. The same RN at a typical pace loses that edge entirely, and at 27 months pays the most of any path on this page.

Purdue Global takes most of the rest. Its structured non-NP MSN at $420 per quarter credit prices out to roughly $25,200 across 60 credits, a derived figure that lands within a hundred dollars of Capella's GuidedPath estimate, so structured non-NP students are choosing on catalog and brand rather than price. For NP-bound RNs the gap is wider: Capella's 68-credit FNP estimate of $40,460 exceeds the cost of even a 90-credit track at Purdue Global's rate, a derived $37,800, and only Purdue Global offers acute care at all. Residency can make the choice for you, and it cuts both ways. A Tennessee address stops Purdue Global cold: those residents cannot enroll in its MSN at all, and Illinois, Indiana, or Wisconsin residents lose some or all of ExcelTrack. Capella's FNP is closed to anyone seeking licensure in California, DC, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, or Pennsylvania. A reader in one of those states tempted to jump to Purdue Global for the NP tracks should read its fine print first: Purdue Global bars Hawaii, Louisiana, New York, Oregon, and Utah residents from every NP focus area, and keeps DC and Washington residents out of its acute-care and psychiatric NP tracks^[2].
