Check Grand Canyon University's state list before you price anything, because it decides this comparison for most readers: GCU enrolls its MSN-FNP in 13 states, and if yours is not on the list the contest is over and Walden wins by default. Inside those states it becomes a real choice between a lower-rate 53-credit program with required campus time and a fully online 58-quarter-credit program with none.

Start with the state list

GCU's program page names the eligible states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas^[1]. That is an unusually short footprint for a large online FNP producer, and it is the first thing to verify because it changes with regulatory approvals.

Walden publishes no short list for its FNP. It publishes a licensure caution instead: every state sets its own academic-preparation and authority-to-practice rules for nurse practitioners, and the school tells students to confirm requirements with their own board before enrolling. Do exactly that at either school. Your state board of nursing and the school's state-authorization page are ten minutes of reading that outrank everything an enrollment counselor says on the phone.

The credit units differ, semester-style at GCU and quarter at Walden, so the rates only become comparable through each school's own totals, covered below.

Five required campus days that nobody prices

Walden has no campus requirement in the FNP. Skills preparation happens through a virtual lab and online case sessions, and the only required in-person component is the practicum itself, completed locally. For a nurse whose schedule cannot absorb planned travel windows, that single difference usually ends the comparison.

750 hours or 640, and who finds the site

GCU requires 750 hours of directly supervised clinical practice, split across three 250-hour practicum courses; its model has you work with faculty to select a local primary care or family care site. Walden requires 640 hours, four practicum courses at 160 hours each per its nursing practicum manual^[2], and backs the search with its Practicum Pledge: register, meet the conditions, and a Field Placement Team partners with you to secure a site and preceptor if your own search stalls.

Neither structure removes the load-bearing risk of any online FNP, which is that the student who cannot lock a preceptor on time loses a term. GCU's extra 110 hours also mean more weeks of clinic time to schedule around shifts, which is either added cost or added preparation depending on how you look at supervised hours. GCU's derived base is 53 credits at $760, about $40,280, and its page does not print an all-in total with fees, so request the full cost-of-attendance sheet in writing. Its transfer policy caps relief at 12 credits or one-third of the program, whichever is less, so do not count on transfer credit closing much of the bill. Walden prints its own stack on the program page: $45,530 in tuition at $785 per quarter credit, $47,650 with program and clinical fees, and a Believe & Achieve Scholarship worth $6,280 off for students who qualify and stay on pace^[3], which puts the scholarship-adjusted figure near $41,370.

Read those two numbers honestly and the sticker gap mostly evaporates: roughly $40,280 derived at GCU against roughly $41,370 adjusted at Walden, with GCU's fees and travel still unpriced. Whoever told you one of these schools is dramatically cheaper was reading one line of one table.

What the federal record says about the nonprofit question

College Navigator, the National Center for Education Statistics' institutional directory, currently lists Grand Canyon University as a 4-year private not-for-profit and Walden as a 4-year private for-profit^[4]. GCU's classification has been fought over between federal agencies for years, so if institutional status matters to you or your employer's reimbursement office, point them at the current listing itself rather than either school's own description, and re-check it at decision time.

Who should go with GCU, and when not to

Go with GCU if you live in one of the 13 states, the campus blocks are reachable without wrecking your work schedule, and you read 750 supervised hours as more preparation rather than more burden. The 16-week course rhythm also suits nurses who prefer fewer, longer courses over a faster quarter cadence.

Walden is the better call when you live outside GCU's footprint, when planned travel is impossible, or when you want the lighter 640-hour clinical requirement and a school-printed total you can hand to a tuition-reimbursement office. Its published minimum finish is 24 months, and its larger online NP catalog leaves a lane change to psych or adult-gerontology inside the same university if family practice stops being the plan. 3. Both: the percentage of the most recent FNP cohort that reached practicum on time, and whose signature the clinical-site agreement carries, the school's or yours.
